Stuck inside? Explore history at home!
COVID-19 is having a major impact on all of our lives. As we practice social distancing, and spend more time at home, it is easy to feel isolated from the things you love. We know how much you love history, and until we can welcome you back to the Society, the Library & Archives, and our sites and museums, we are going to bring more history straight to you! Here are some free resources to get you started on your adventure through the past.
Research your family history
Search over 3,000,000 records including birth, death, and marriage record indexes; newspaper clippings; photographs and other visual materials; and property records from National Register and State Register of Historic Places and the Wisconsin Architecture and History Inventory (AHI).

Discover your community's history
Research your community's history in our collections. Volunteers in many Wisconsin communities are actively collecting and preserving local history. Find out more about Wisconsin's nearly 575 state historical markers and how you can find them.

Explore our collections
The Society's world-class collections contain an extraordinary range of artifacts and information about North American history, from the remote archaeological past to current events. Find films, shipwrecks, online exhibits, maps, atlases, menus, oral histories, and some of the favorite items from our curators.

COVID-19 Update
The Wisconsin Historical Society is committed to ensuring the safety of our guests and staff. With the most recent information regarding COVID-19 we have made the decision to temporarily close our library and archives at the Society’s Headquarters Building in Madison as well as our historic sites and museums across the state to the public until at least April 11, 2020. Please check back for updates. All school tours are also canceled at all of our historic sites and museums until at least May 11, 2020.
Epidemic of 1918
As we write a new chapter in our history, it's sometimes helpful to reflect on the past. Learn about the 1918-1919 Influenza Epidemic in the article below.

SUPPORT THE SOCIETY
Your support makes an impact β€” now more than ever
Right now, the Society is making some difficult decisions in order to ensure the safety of our guests and staff. This means that many of our programs and events will be cancelled or postponed, and our sites and museums will be closed to the public for a while. As you can imagine, this will take a financial toll on the Society. Your gift will help make sure that Society staff have the resources they need continue preserving Wisconsin history. Any amount will help close the gap in our funding. Together, we can make sure that this crucial work will not be stopped, even in the midst of a pandemic.

THIS WEEK IN WISCONSIN HISTORY
Houdini born 'in Wisconsin'
March 24, 1874 - On this week 146 years ago, one of the greatest magicians to ever live, Harry Houdini, was born in Budapest, though he later claimed to have been born in Appleton, Wis. At the age of 9, he left Appleton, where his family had emigrated, for New York City, and began his career as an escape artist and magician. You can read more about Houdini's time in Wisconsin in this article from the Magazine of Wisconsin History.
